Welcome to the 2011-12 School Programs and Clubs
The Canterbury Woods PTA sponsors a variety of programs and activities, which are organized by our dedicated committee chairs and coordinators. Look at the list below to learn more about a committee or program.
Programs for Students, Parents and Teachers
Art Gallery
The PTA Art Gallery is a self-sustaining program which frames and displays student artwork.
Parents, students, and teachers enjoy seeing the wonderful art brightening the Canterbury Woods entryway. Once framed, the art is available for parent purchase. Please contact Linda Wood or Corinne Krill if you would like to help with the program in 2010-2011.
Beautification
The Beautification Committee is responsible for planting gardens surrounding the school and other environmental projects to enhance the Canterbury Woods environment.
Contact Pam Hardin, Beautification Chair, if you’d like to volunteer to help with Beautification projects or have ideas for conservation and environmental projects at Canterbury Woods.
CWES Chess Club
CWES Chess Club is open to 2nd – 6th graders, and all levels of play!
Students of all levels of play, including those that have NEVER played before are welcome. It is amazing to see the level of confidence, added spatial awareness and problem solving that chess playing is documented to produce in young children.
This year, our Chess Club will be professionally taught and run by the US Chess Center. We will have two Chess Masters, and one qualified teacher instructing the members of our Chess Club. Chess Master, Greg Acholonu, is our head instructor. He earned the title of National Master in 1982 and became a Senior Master (highest national ranking) in 1989. He loves teaching children the game of chess and highly encourages all ages and abilities to give it a try!

Tournaments and Club News
In the past four years our school team and players have performed well in various district and US Chess Center tournaments. Opportunities to participate in local tournaments including the Springfield Jamboree (8 local schools) will be communicated throughout the session.

FLEX Program
Interested in the FLEX before-school language program?
Your PTA, in conjunction with Fairfax County Public Schools Adult and Community Education, is planning to offer a Foreign Language Experience (FLEX) program.
As a student in the FLEX language program, your child will receive an introduction to the target language and culture. Utilizing their senses, the students will learn through dialogues, commands, pictures, stories, songs, games and foods of the target country. Due to the time limitations and the nature of the program, please do not expect fluency. Students will not receive grades. Instructors will send home a progress report at the end of the course.

The program begins the week of Sept. 26 and culminates Nov 20 with a 5K in Bristow, VA. Additional information and registration via the website www.gotrnova.org Registration for Girls on the Run closes on Monday, September 12. An additional fee of $25 may be charged for late registration after Sept 12.
GRACE Arts
The Greater Reston Arts Center enriches community life by promoting involvement and excellence in the visual arts.
In pursuit of this mission, GRACE Arts is a program for area schools to introduce specific artists’ work and art genre portfolios to their student population. Parent volunteers (no art experience necessary!) serve as docents at CWES, presenting four portfolios during each school year. These in-class presentations are enhanced by an art project coordinated specifically to further the understanding of and appreciation for the subject. Please e-mail the new chairperson, Heather Hartung with any questions.
Hospitality
The Hospitality Committee’s goal is to ensure that the educational team at Canterbury Woods is recognized and appreciated throughout the school year.
We organize a welcome-back staff lunch, monthly staff breakfasts, Teacher Appreciation Week activities, and Custodian Appreciation and Secretary Day events. Please e-mail the new Hospitality Chair, Peggi Phelps or Christina Norica, if you’d like to join the committee or have ideas for ways to recognize our great school staff!
Odyssey of the Mind
Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college.
Team members apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics. For more information on the program itself, visit the program’s website and download this pdf; to volunteer to help with our school’s team for the 2011-2012 school year, or with questions, please contact our coordinator Anne Akers-Smith.
Reflections Arts Program
Reflections Arts is a National PTA program that encourages and recognizes student creativity and artistic expression in visual arts, literature, musical composition, dance choreography, film production, and photography.
Special Education
The PTA Special Education Committee is dedicated to ensuring that all parents have resources and a voice in their children’s education, and to enhancing the parent-school partnership.
We maintain a Yahoo! group listserv to share information on conferences, programs, articles of interest, and our own experience; frequently meet as a parent support and information group; and sponsor programs of interest to both parents and educational team members. Please contact Sally Milian (milianfive@gmail.com) if you have ideas or suggestions for future programs, or would otherwise like to support the Committee’s activities.
