CWES PTA Programs
for Students, Parents, and Teachers

Art Gallery
The PTA Art Gallery is a self-sustaining program which frames and displays student artwork. Parents, students, and teachers enjoy seeing the wonderful art brightening the Canterbury Woods entryway. Once framed, the art is available for parent purchase. Please contact Linda Wood if you would like to help with the program.
Beautification
The Beautification Committee is responsible for planting gardens surrounding the school and other environmental projects to enhance the Canterbury Woods environment. Contact Pam Hardin, Beautification Chair, if you’d like to volunteer to help with Beautification projects or have ideas for conservation and environmental projects at Canterbury Woods.
Cultural Arts
The Cultural Arts chair fulfills the CWES PTA’s goal of providing enrichment to students through assemblies, performances, and in-class curricular events. The Cultural Arts 2008-2009 calendar is full of educational and fun activities, including the ever-popular Barefoot Puppets and Worm Lady, as well as Talking to Robots, Ancient Tales from Ancient Civilizations, and reenactors. Please e-mail our Cultural Arts Chairs, Barb McCracken and Amy Palmer, if you have questions or suggestions about the program.
GRACE Arts
The Greater Reston Arts Center enriches community life by promoting involvement and excellence in the visual arts. In pursuit of this mission, GRACE Arts is a program for area schools to introduce specific artists’ work and art genre portfolios to their student population. Parent volunteers (no art experience necessary!) serve as docents at CWES, presenting four portfolios during each school year. These in-class presentations are enhanced by an art project coordinated specifically to further the understanding of and appreciation for the subject.
In 2008-2009, we’ll be exploring the work of 20th century artists, including Andy Warhol, Faith Ringgold, and Henri Matisse. We’ll also do a survey of kings and queen portraiture throughout the world. If you would like to become a GRACE Arts docent or volunteer, please contact Kelly Kovacev or Nancy Malina. Hospitality
The Hospitality Committee’s goal is to ensure that the educational team at Canterbury Woods is recognized and appreciated throughout the school year. We organize a welcome-back staff lunch, monthly staff breakfasts, Teacher Appreciation Week activities, and Custodian Appreciation and Secretary Day events. Please e-mail the Hospitality Chair, Kelley Cosby, if you’d like to join the committee or have ideas for ways to recognize our great school staff!
Odyssey of the Mind
Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college. Team members apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics. For more information on the program itself, visit the program’s website; to volunteer to help with our school’s team for the 2008-2009 school year, or with questions, please contact our coordinator Anne Akers-Smith.
